Starting off with a classic boy meets girl college romance story The Girlfriend sets the stage for a love story that is sprinkled with self-reflective empowerment and the strength to overcome the emotionally challenging moments in life. The story revolves around the ma in literature graduate who is ambitious and moves to hyderabad to chase her dreams - Bhooma Devi (Rashmika Mandanna). At college Bhooma meets the charming and dynamic Vikram "Vicky" (Dheekshith Shetty). With Vikram being a major posh boy of the college, Bhooma is quickly swept off her feet. However, this posh boy of college seems to have a major dual personality that is revealed slowly. From being the charming Vikram, he slowly transitions to being the Vikram who's controlling and shows possessive behavior. This Vikram slowly gets on to the Bhooma's head and starts to drain the essence of the real her. For a relationship's emotional turmoil to be complete, this transformation of love into toxicity is a must. This is a must that for the emotional drain of Boooma to be totally and completely achieved a number of emotional and psychological head-on confrontations need to be completed. This emotional drain and loss of essence of self for the culture and ambition of the relationship is what The Girlfriend is fully about. The gradual emotional changes that transform love into toxicity and the emotional drain that is needed to be achieved is what The Girlfriend is attempting to portray with Boooma. Bhooma's friends and family surround her, and she must navigate them all to reach self-empowerment. The narrative explores wrestling with personal boundaries, emotional manipulation, societal expectations, and the reclaiming of love after the sacrifice of self. The film embraces discomfort and shows how good intentions move into the territory of control, how the absence of freedom illustrates the presence of a good, but painful, awakening. Through its layered storytelling, The Girlfriend invites audiences to reflect on the intricacies of modern relationships and how emotionally toxic dynamics can subtly and powerfully undermine one's self-worth.
